Gazmend Kapllani is talking about his book, A Short Border Handbook at the Southbank Centre on Sunday 17th May 2009 at 3pm.
Gazmend Kapllani is an Albanian who grew up under communism, and for whom ‘the twinkling electric lights’ of Greece offered freedom and love. His memoir, A Short Border Handbook, is a blackly comic tale of life in a detention centre, and an acerbic reflection on the immigrant experience.
He will be in conversation with Vesna Maric, author of Bluebird and the event is chaired by Misha Glenny.
An exhilarating and blackly funny exploration of migration and borders from an Albanian who grew up in Hoxha’s madhouse, longing to cross to Greece, only to find another seam of absurdities and disappointments on his eventual arrival.
