Crocus season is upon us and March has got off to a budding start for Portobello authors! Matthew Green’s The Wizard of the Nile has been longlisted for the Orwell Book Prize 2009, Alexander Ahndoril’s The Director has been longlisted for The Independent Prize for Foreign Fiction 2009 and Catherine Hall, author of Days of Grace, has been chosen as one of Waterstone’s New Voices 2009. Fingers crossed for both Matthew and Alexander and congratulations to all three! You can read more about these awards in our news section.

This month is also a bumper one for new books as March sees the publication of Yasmin Alibhai-Brown’s memoir and new fiction from the much-loved Gina Ochsner.

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is one of Britain’s most prominent commentators on race, multiculturalism and human rights. Her memoir, The Settler's Cookbook: A Memoir of Love, Migration and Food contains the cultural and culinary history of a people as it traces, via her family, the journey of East African Indians from India to Uganda to Britain. It is a warm and evocative book full of recipes and stories that have been passed on and shared around, and which continue to feed and inspire friends and relatives to this day.

Gina Ochnser’s short story collection, People I Wanted To Be drew comparison’s with her fellow Oregonian Raymond Carver.

Gina Ochnser’s short story collection, People I Wanted To Be drew comparison’s with her fellow Oregonian Raymond Carver and we expect no less praise for The Russian Dreambook of Colour and Flight. This bewitching novel of post-Soviet lives moves between the magical, the comical and the transcendent to portray a people who rely on dreams to defy the coming of dereliction and decay.

Happy reading!
