Richard Dowden is Director of the Royal African Society. After first going to Africa in 1971 as a teacher, he became a reporter there for The Times, and went on to spend a decade as the founding Africa Editor of the Independent, and then a further decade as Africa Editor of The Economist. There are few reporters writing in English now who have had more experience of life as it is lived in a wider variety of African communities. He has made three television documentaries on Africa, for the BBC and Channel 4. Africa is his first book.
