In order to research The Old Child, Erpenbeck went back to school, pretending to be 17, when she actually was 27. None of her classmates discovered her true age. After 3 weeks, she left with lots of material for the book: concerning situations you get in if you are lying all the time about your age; if you have to maintain silence about experiences you've already had; if you have to hide your former life completely and have to change your “old” character into the character of a much younger person.
